Appeals & Declines

Declined or suspended? Decline reasons decoded, the 90-day ITSAA appeal process, and how to win reconsiderations with evidence.

A declined SASSA status is not the end of the road. Every SRD R370 and permanent grant decline can be appealed to the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA), which has 90 days from the decline date to hear your case. For SRD, the appeal is filed on srd.sassa.gov.za under "Appeal" for the specific month that was declined. For permanent grants, the appeal is filed at any SASSA local office. This section explains each decline reason in plain language ("Alternative Income Source Identified", "Means Income Identified", "Existing Social Grant", "Identity Verification Failed", "Debtor Admin"), what SASSA is checking behind the scenes, and what evidence typically wins a reconsideration. It also covers grant suspensions, lapsed grants, and the reinstatement process. The single biggest reason appeals fail is missing the 90-day window; the second is filing an appeal without any new evidence or corrected information. The decline-reasons guide is the correct starting point when you first see a red status.
