SASSA Essentials
The core SASSA toolkit: verified contact numbers, office details, the WhatsApp and USSD truth, cards, and how the agency actually works in 2026.
SASSA (the South African Social Security Agency) administers every non-contributory social grant in South Africa, from the Old Age Pension to the R370 SRD grant. This section covers the everyday questions beneficiaries ask most: which phone numbers are actually official, whether the WhatsApp channel really works, what USSD codes currently do and do not exist, how the local and provincial offices operate, and the difference between an old SASSA Gold card and the new Postbank black card. The 2026 landscape shifted after the Post Office lost its SASSA payment role and Postbank took over card issuance. Some third-party sites still cite defunct numbers and dead USSD codes. Every entry here is checked against sassa.gov.za and the SRD portal at srd.sassa.gov.za before publishing. If a channel is unverified or contested, we say so instead of guessing. Use these guides to confirm the correct official channel before you call, message, or dial anything that claims to be SASSA.

What's inside SASSA Essentials
The SASSA Essentials cluster is the trust layer for every other section of MySRD. Before you check a status, appeal a decline, or apply for any grant, you need to know that the number you are calling actually belongs to SASSA, that the WhatsApp account is not a scam, and that the USSD code you dial will not silently bill your airtime. This hub verifies each channel against the official sassa.gov.za and srd.sassa.gov.za pages every month.
The people who benefit most are new beneficiaries getting their first Postbank card, family members helping an older relative on Old Age Pension (R2,400 or R2,420 for over-75s), and anyone who received a WhatsApp message from a number claiming to be SASSA and needs to verify it before sharing personal information. If you are being asked for your PIN, banking password, or a photo of your ID by anyone claiming to be from SASSA, treat it as fraud and report it on 0800 60 10 11.
2026 updates that matter
The two biggest 2026 shifts to internalise are: the SRD R370 grant has been extended to March 2027, so the monthly re-verification cycle continues without interruption; and Postbank now issues the black SASSA card that replaced both the old Gold SASSA card and the Post Office payout system. If you are still holding a Gold SASSA card, visit a Postbank-enabled branch with your green ID or Smart ID to swap it. The new card works at ATMs, retailer till points (Pick n Pay, Shoprite, Checkers, Boxer, USave), and for CashSend collection.
Only two verified contact channels remain active in 2026: the toll-free helpline 0800 60 10 11 and the WhatsApp service on 082 046 8553. Any other number circulating on social media, including 082 054 0016, is unverified and should not be used for status enquiries. No current official SASSA page lists a USSD code for SRD status. The codes circulating on third-party sites have never been confirmed by SASSA, so we do not publish them. Confirm any code you are given on 0800 60 10 11 before you dial it.
Frequently asked questions
What is the real SASSA WhatsApp number?
The only official SASSA WhatsApp number is 082 046 8553. Save it as "SASSA Official", send "Hi", and choose Status from the menu.
Which USSD code checks my SRD status?
No current official SASSA page lists one. The codes on third-party sites have never been confirmed by SASSA. Check your status on srd.sassa.gov.za, on WhatsApp 082 046 8553, or call 0800 60 10 11 free from any network.
Is the old SASSA Gold card still working?
Postbank is phasing out the Gold SASSA card in favour of the new black card. Visit any Postbank-enabled branch with your ID to swap. Payments still land on the Gold card during the transition, but the new card is safer and works at more retailers.
How do I report SASSA fraud?
Call the fraud hotline on 0800 60 10 11 or email gcis@dsd.gov.za. Never pay anyone claiming to speed up a SASSA application.
Do I need to reapply after the R350 became R370?
No. The amount changed automatically for existing SRD beneficiaries. Your file, ID, and cellphone stay the same.
Can SASSA staff visit my house?
SASSA does conduct verification visits for permanent grants, especially Foster Care and Disability. Staff will have an ID card and a written authorisation. They never ask for money or PINs.
Where is my nearest SASSA office?
Use the office locator at sassa.gov.za or call 0800 60 10 11. Local offices handle permanent grant applications; SRD is entirely online.
