UIF

UIF benefits explained: claiming on uifonline.labour.gov.za, payouts, maternity benefits, and how UIF interacts with SASSA grants.

The Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) is separate from SASSA. UIF is a contributory system: workers and employers pay in each month, and eligible workers can claim short-term benefits when they lose their job, take maternity leave, become ill, or when a contributor dies. Claims are filed at uifonline.labour.gov.za or at a Department of Employment and Labour office. This section covers benefit types (unemployment, maternity, illness, adoption, death), the calculation of the daily benefit amount, expected payout timelines, and the online claim flow. The most important intersection with SASSA is the SRD R370 grant: when SASSA runs its monthly means check and finds an active UIF payment, the SRD is auto-declined for that month as "Alternative Income Source Identified". Once the UIF benefit ends, SRD eligibility usually returns automatically for the next monthly cycle without needing to reapply.
